The protests are working. Minneapolis will disband the police force. Other areas are discussing defunding their police forces. "Breonna's Law" outlaws no-knock warrants in Louisville. The Louisville police chief was removed from his post after an unrelated shooting by police officers-- another unarmed black citizen, this time at a protest. Louisville's mayor has issued a request for proposal for a comprehensive, top-to-bottom review of the entire Louisville police department The officers who killed Breonna are on administrative leave. (The question of their firings or prosecutions come after the investigation.) Keep it up.

Read The New Jim Crow about racial discrimination in law enforcement and the rise of mass incarceration.
Finally New York State has a special prosecutor's office to investigate cases where a person dies while in police custody. Previously, these investigations were done by local district attorneys. This old system was crippled by built-in conflicts of interest, since local district attorneys have to work with cops on their other cases.

So what's up with those gender transforming Snapchat filters? Are they a blessing or a curse? In this week's episode we answer a listener question from Bridget who asks "I was wondering if you had an opinion on the new MtF and FtM Snapchat lenses. People on Twitter seem to be having a field day with them having fun. I was wondering what your thoughts were in it. Is it awesome, awful, or couldn’t care less. It seems like there is a lot of ways to look at this. On one hand it’s nice to get a 'helping hand' for selfies that can help your self esteem. In the other hand, I could see it as people making light of something that causes restless nights of in the trans community."

Will transition change where you go on vacation? For this episode we answer a listener question from Jane who writes "How has transition change the places you go or the things that you do? It's pretty well known that not all places are welcoming of LGBT families. Are there places that you will not visit now, or places that you do visit now? Here is a personal example. Two years ago my family took a rode trip from our home in Washington State to Detroit and back. Last year we flew to Germany and visited many German towns and the city of Prague. A huge bucket list item for me is to see first hand the changes to Yellowstone National Park after the reintroduction of wolves. Are any of these trips something you would consider as an LGBT couple?"

It's great when cis people are trans allies. But can you screw up being an ally? Will people think you're trans if you join in the fight? Will you make it too much about you? In this episode we answer a listener question from Sarah who asks "As an ally, I worry about potentially falling into a cultural appropriation trap. Am I sending a transmission through some of these choices? I don't care whether or not people in general wonder if I'm trans, but, I also don't want to end up centering myself in the process. In other words...I don't want to be a Rachel Dolezal."

What can hormone replacement therapy (HRT) really do? In this episode we answer a listener question from Sabene. She asks "Once I start on female hormones, will there really be a 'fat redistribution?' Will those fat cells in my belly call a moving company and haul ass down to my ass?". We'll discuss HRT, body shape and whether HRT will really let your cells haul ass around your body.

Fear.
Thursday Sep 07, 2017
Thursday Sep 07, 2017
Transition can be scary. Transgender people face fear of rejection, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty. They fear for their safety. In this episode, we answer a listener question from Sabene who asks "How do you combat and overcome that fear? I am really struggling with that right now. I mean, it's almost pathological. And so I'd love to get your points of view and your experiences. I have to get over this hurdle... and I don't know if I ever will."
Some songs that deal honestly with mental illness (not that transgender people are mentally ill) and fear, and might prove inspirational, include Better Son/Daughter by Rilo Kiley, Bravado by Lorde (again with the Lorde), and Silk by Wolf Alice.

She asks "Faith, you've mentioned several times that you spent many years identifying as a cross dresser and some time identifying dual gender. I'm wondering if you could share more about that time of your life and what that experience was like for you." Are You a Real Girl?
Thursday Jun 29, 2017
Thursday Jun 29, 2017
Let's face it, no one wants to be asked if they're a "real girl." In this episode the Gender Rebels answer question from listeners Laura Jean and Nathalie who enjoy taking in a drag show now and again. But, they ask, what do you do when you're having fabulous fun and a random person comes up and asks "Are you a real girl?" How can a cis girl, a trans girl, or anyone respond to that?
Sadly, both local CSRA gay bars we mentioned, Colosseum and Marlboro Station, are both appear to closed.

Holidays and Bigotry
Thursday Dec 22, 2016
Thursday Dec 22, 2016
Holidays are a time that brings the whole family together. And as anyone who's ever had a family can tell you, that's not always a good thing. It's especially difficult for LGBTQ people who might find themselves having to pass the mashed potatoes to the transphobic or homophobic person sitting next to them at dinner.
This holiday season we answer a question from Embedded Emily on twitter (@embeddedemily). She asks "I'm a grown up transgender person who lives on my own and my parents refuse to use preferred name/pronouns. They've claimed it's explicitly for religious reasons. Should I go to holiday events with them and just accept their disapproval or is their disapproval such that I should just avoid them and all the family's holiday gatherings?"
