Coming Out in a Tough Situation- featuring Brooke Guinan

Woman_on_Fire_Lieutenant_Guinan_brooke_church.jpg
Coming out is hard, and a non-supportive situation only makes it harder. In this episode we answer a question a lot of listeners have asked: How do you come out when your family, friends, co-workers, and neighborhood may not be supportive? To get some insight from someone who did just that, we talk with Brooke Guinan. She's the first openly transgender firefighter in the FDNY, the New York City Fire Department. We'll learn about this third-generation firefighter who grew up steeped in tradition, and how she found the courage to come out and be her true self.

Be sure and check out the new documentary film, Woman on Fire, which tells Brooke's story. It was awarded an Official Selection at DOC NYC.  We saw an advanced copy and this movie is funny, heartfelt, and moving. Check out the trailer here or watch now on iTunes

Also, Brooke mentioned GSA, Gay Student Alliance Network, which is a student-led organization dedicated to helping LGBTQ junior high and high school students.  They support each other and provide safe spaces to be who they are.

Am I Transgender Enough?

78741754.jpg

How do you know you're transgender or ready for transition? In this episode we answer a question a lot of listeners have asked. Do the thoughts and feelings I have make me transgender? What if I'm not ready for that? Am I really transgender enough to transition? Other trans people I've seen seem so much more advanced than me. On this episode we'll discuss how to deal with dysphoria and questions about whether transition is right for you.

Here's a link to the DSM V. This one's big and expensive.  Don't buy it, but if you see it in the reference section of your library and have an hour to kill, it's fun to flip through.  "Gender Dysphoria" is what we usually talk about on TGR, but the whole book is pretty cool, according  to Kath.

Part Time

 maxresdefault.jpg

What does it mean to be a "part time" transgender person? In this episode we'll discuss the difference between being part time and full time. We'll talk what it means to live part time and discuss the costs and benefits of being out only some of the time to only some of the people in your life.

If you are thinking about harming yourself, please, please, please reach out for help by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline  1-800-273-8255 or the Trans Lifeline - 877-565-8860. You are not alone and you are worthwhile.

Fat Redistribution

KOLATA-jumbo.jpg

What can hormone replacement therapy (HRT) really do? In this episode we answer a listener question from Sabene. She asks "Once I start on female hormones, will there really be a 'fat redistribution?'  Will those fat cells in my belly call a moving company and haul ass down to my ass?". We'll discuss HRT, body shape and whether HRT will really let your cells haul ass around your body.

Here's the famous chart showing effects of HRT over time for MtFs, including, yes, fat redistribution. OBjQy5Z.jpg

Fear.

SUDDEN-FEAR_MAIN1520.jpg

Transition can be scary. Transgender people face fear of rejection, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty. They fear for their safety. In this episode, we answer a listener question from Sabene who asks "How do you combat and overcome that fear? I am really struggling with that right now. I mean, it's almost pathological. And so I'd love to get your points of view and your experiences.  I have to get over this hurdle... and I don't know if I ever will."

Some songs that deal honestly with mental illness (not that transgender people are mentally ill) and fear, and might prove inspirational, include Better Son/Daughter by Rilo Kiley, Bravado by Lorde (again with the Lorde), and Silk by Wolf Alice.

Also check out Faith's review of Boy Meets Girl featuring the wonderful trans actress Michelle Hendley.

Coming Out Transgender at Work

o-WORKING-WOMAN-facebook.jpg

Coming out at work is a major step in transition. How does one even start?  In this episode, we'll discuss some ways to help your workplace transition go smoothly, peacefully, and as stressfree as possible. We'll talk planning, working with your organization and supervisor, dealing with problems and more.

Check out Faith's Guide to Coming Out at Work. Here is Faith's coming out memo/email that went out company-wide, her own workplace transition plan, and a sample workplace transition policy that she helped write.

Lamda Legal and the ACLU both may be resources if you encounter employment discrimination. Also check out the US Labor Laws, as they can vary from place to place.

Also check out the Lorde song Bravado, which helped Faith screw up the courage to come out to HR.

Everything In Between

 Nbflag8.png

What does it mean to have a non-binary gender identity?  In this episode, we talk with Avery who identifies as non-binary/genderqueer. We talk with them about the joys and frustrations of being non-binary, what it's like coming out, how fluid a concept gender really is, how we can all help make the world a friendlier place for non-binary folks and more.

Loved this little comic, but didn't want to use it for the main episode since there was no attribution. If you know the artist, please let us know!

Choosing Your Label

1.jpg
How can an LGBTQ person figure out what label really works for them?  In this episode, we answer a listener question from Sasha. She asks "Faith, you've mentioned several times that you spent many years identifying as a cross dresser and some time identifying dual gender. I'm wondering if you could share more about that time of your life and what that experience was like for you." Faith tells the story of her own journey through the labels, what labels mean, and how you can start to figure out who you are.

Check out urnotalone and tsroadmap - two early websites Faith frequented in her early days. Also,be sure and check out the the famous K.D. Lang and Cindy Crawford Vanity Fair cover. And perhaps you'll find some solace in the song Ring of Keys from the Broadway musical Fun Home

Electrolysis: Destroyer of Hairs

renandrey-large.jpg

The best way to  rid yourself a nasty case of beard is electrolysis. To get the skinny on this procedure, we talk to Sara, a transgender woman who's personally had thousands of hairs ripped out of her face thanks to the magic of science. We'll talk about the costs, the effects, the pain (ouch), and what to expect when you go in for your electrolysis appointment.
