Okay, Sometimes Pride is Annoying

Are we OBLIGATED to celebrate Pride? What if parades and dance parties are just not your scene? What about those people wearing nothing but body glitter? You can support their life and autonomy without wanting to be around genitals and glitter. What if house music isn't your thing?  Do you have to turn in your gay card?

Should Pride Include Cops and Corporations?

policelesbiancouplepride.jpg
Should Pride parades ban police from marching or being involved with the parades? What part should corporations be allowed to play in Pride celebrations? In this episode we explore the question of whether some organizations should be dis-invited to Pride celebrations.

A group called the Reclaim Pride Coalition announced in May that it will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots with a separate march. Reclaim Pride’s Queer Liberation March will begin 2.5 hours before the official parade on June 30, and will not allow either corporate or police contingents.

Here is an article about the NYPD apology for their actions that led to the Stonewall Riots.

Coming Out in a Tough Situation- featuring Brooke Guinan

Woman_on_Fire_Lieutenant_Guinan_brooke_church.jpg
Coming out is hard, and a non-supportive situation only makes it harder. In this episode we answer a question a lot of listeners have asked: How do you come out when your family, friends, co-workers, and neighborhood may not be supportive? To get some insight from someone who did just that, we talk with Brooke Guinan. She's the first openly transgender firefighter in the FDNY, the New York City Fire Department. We'll learn about this third-generation firefighter who grew up steeped in tradition, and how she found the courage to come out and be her true self.

Be sure and check out the new documentary film, Woman on Fire, which tells Brooke's story. It was awarded an Official Selection at DOC NYC.  We saw an advanced copy and this movie is funny, heartfelt, and moving. Check out the trailer here or watch now on iTunes

Also, Brooke mentioned GSA, Gay Student Alliance Network, which is a student-led organization dedicated to helping LGBTQ junior high and high school students.  They support each other and provide safe spaces to be who they are.
