Is 2019 a Bad Time to Come Out Trans?

Is the political climate right now conducive to coming out trans? In this week's episode we answer a listener question: "Someone close to me has come out to me as trans and I’m so proud of her but so many things in the news scare me. I know she finds them scary too. I just wonder, if you were facing starting a transition in today’s world, would you? Would any of the threats to trans rights going on today give you pause if you were still at the beginning of this process?"

In most parts of America, trans people are NOT accepted by the minority, and experience huge amounts of aggression and violence. Even in most liberal areas. As one example of this, I live in an area that is considered super LGBT friendly... by outsiders. That is not the case. At all. There’s very little direct violence, but there’s still huge amounts of discrimination and aggression. The majority of the trans people I know are closeted, because they’re too afraid to come out and be subjected to all the stuff the out trans folks are. I am even one of those people. I am non-binary, but I’m considering coming out and saying I’m binary, because enby people are treated substantially worse than other trans people here. Cis people here are not upset about Trump rolling back protections. They were cheering it on. Saying that everything’s all hunky dory in America is false. Increased visibility leads to increased discrimination. More people know about us, and thus more people can express their bigotry.

Hmm. I’m new to this podcast series, and I am currently questioning a lot of things. Asserting that Obama did very little for trans people isn’t fair: he made being trans in the military legal, he extended protections to trans children which was immensely influential. He started letting trans people into the country as refugees. Ect. Saying that the Trump presidency isn’t much worse is just straight up untrue. As I said I’m new to this podcast, and I appreciate that it exists and you give lots of good advice, but one of my biggest takeaways so far is that you are speaking from a place of relative privilege. Saying that transphobia is at its least now, that the majority of cis people accept us, that is an experience that only exists for certain people in certain areas with certain privileges.
