Am I Transgender Enough?
Thursday Sep 28, 2017
Thursday Sep 28, 2017
How do you know you're transgender or ready for transition? In this episode we answer a question a lot of listeners have asked. Do the thoughts and feelings I have make me transgender? What if I'm not ready for that? Am I really transgender enough to transition? Other trans people I've seen seem so much more advanced than me. On this episode we'll discuss how to deal with dysphoria and questions about whether transition is right for you.

Here's a link to the DSM V. This one's big and expensive. Don't buy it, but if you see it in the reference section of your library and have an hour to kill, it's fun to flip through. "Gender Dysphoria" is what we usually talk about on TGR, but the whole book is pretty cool, according to Kath.

What does it mean to be a "part time" transgender person? In this episode we'll discuss the difference between being part time and full time. We'll talk what it means to live part time and discuss the costs and benefits of being out only some of the time to only some of the people in your life.

Fat Redistribution

What can hormone replacement therapy (HRT) really do? In this episode we answer a listener question from Sabene. She asks "Once I start on female hormones, will there really be a 'fat redistribution?' Will those fat cells in my belly call a moving company and haul ass down to my ass?". We'll discuss HRT, body shape and whether HRT will really let your cells haul ass around your body.
Here's the famous chart showing effects of HRT over time for MtFs, including, yes, fat redistribution.

Fear.
Thursday Sep 07, 2017
Thursday Sep 07, 2017
Transition can be scary. Transgender people face fear of rejection, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty. They fear for their safety. In this episode, we answer a listener question from Sabene who asks "How do you combat and overcome that fear? I am really struggling with that right now. I mean, it's almost pathological. And so I'd love to get your points of view and your experiences. I have to get over this hurdle... and I don't know if I ever will."
Some songs that deal honestly with mental illness (not that transgender people are mentally ill) and fear, and might prove inspirational, include Better Son/Daughter by Rilo Kiley, Bravado by Lorde (again with the Lorde), and Silk by Wolf Alice.
Also check out Faith's review of Boy Meets Girl featuring the wonderful trans actress Michelle Hendley.

Coming out at work is a major step in transition. How does one even start? In this episode, we'll discuss some ways to help your workplace transition go smoothly, peacefully, and as stressfree as possible. We'll talk planning, working with your organization and supervisor, dealing with problems and more.
Check out Faith's Guide to Coming Out at Work. Here is Faith's coming out memo/email that went out company-wide, her own workplace transition plan, and a sample workplace transition policy that she helped write.
Lamda Legal and the ACLU both may be resources if you encounter employment discrimination. Also check out the US Labor Laws, as they can vary from place to place.
Also check out the Lorde song Bravado, which helped Faith screw up the courage to come out to HR.
