Thursday Nov 23, 2017
What's it like being non-binary in a world that's far too stuck in the gender binary? In this episode we talk with our friend Avery. They explain the issues non-binary people face shopping for clothes, looking for a job, deciding to physically transition, finding language to express themselves, and fitting in in the fitting in to the LGBTQ community.
Be sure and check out our other episode featuring Avery, Everything in Between. And also check out this helpful tutorial about turning men's band shirts into slim fitting, curvier shirts.

It's great when cis people are trans allies. But can you screw up being an ally? Will people think you're trans if you join in the fight? Will you make it too much about you? In this episode we answer a listener question from Sarah who asks "As an ally, I worry about potentially falling into a cultural appropriation trap. Am I sending a transmission through some of these choices? I don't care whether or not people in general wonder if I'm trans, but, I also don't want to end up centering myself in the process. In other words...I don't want to be a Rachel Dolezal."
Check out wikipedia if you want to read to sordid tale of Rachel Doezal. Also here's the list of films featuring a "White Savior" narrative. In this episode we mention Callen Lorde Community Health Center, an LGBTQ health center in NYC that provides care regardless of ability to pay. They do amazing, sorely needed work for vulnerable communities. You can click here to donate and help support their work.

Transgender Halloween Adventures
Thursday Oct 26, 2017
Thursday Oct 26, 2017
Halloween can be an amazing time for transgender people. It can provide an opportunity to dip your toe into coming out and to present how you've always wanted to without fear of judgement or rejection. But, Halloween can also be a time for inadvertently offensive costumes. In this episode we answer a listener question from Shayla, who asks about how to do a feminine-presenting costume without accidentally offending the transgender people in her life. We'll also share some listerner stories about their own Halloween adventures.

Coming Out in a Tough Situation- featuring Brooke Guinan

Thursday Oct 05, 2017
Coming out is hard, and a non-supportive situation only makes it harder. In this episode we answer a question a lot of listeners have asked: How do you come out when your family, friends, co-workers, and neighborhood may not be supportive? To get some insight from someone who did just that, we talk with Brooke Guinan. She's the first openly transgender firefighter in the FDNY, the New York City Fire Department. We'll learn about this third-generation firefighter who grew up steeped in tradition, and how she found the courage to come out and be her true self.
Be sure and check out the new documentary film, Woman on Fire, which tells Brooke's story. It was awarded an Official Selection at DOC NYC. We saw an advanced copy and this movie is funny, heartfelt, and moving. Check out the trailer here or watch now on iTunes.
Also, Brooke mentioned GSA, Gay Student Alliance Network, which is a student-led organization dedicated to helping LGBTQ junior high and high school students. They support each other and provide safe spaces to be who they are.

Fear.

Thursday Sep 07, 2017
Transition can be scary. Transgender people face fear of rejection, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty. They fear for their safety. In this episode, we answer a listener question from Sabene who asks "How do you combat and overcome that fear? I am really struggling with that right now. I mean, it's almost pathological. And so I'd love to get your points of view and your experiences. I have to get over this hurdle... and I don't know if I ever will."
Some songs that deal honestly with mental illness (not that transgender people are mentally ill) and fear, and might prove inspirational, include Better Son/Daughter by Rilo Kiley, Bravado by Lorde (again with the Lorde), and Silk by Wolf Alice.
Also check out Faith's review of Boy Meets Girl featuring the wonderful trans actress Michelle Hendley.
And if you're in the greater New York area, why not stop by the Alley Pond Adventure Course where you can learn to overcome your fear by jumping off a 40-foot telephone pole. You'll survive. Faith did. (Kath chickened out.) Have faith.

How can an LGBTQ person figure out what label really works for them? In this episode, we answer a listener question from Sasha. She asks "Faith, you've mentioned several times that you spent many years identifying as a cross dresser and some time identifying dual gender. I'm wondering if you could share more about that time of your life and what that experience was like for you." Faith tells the story of her own journey through the labels, what labels mean, and how you can start to figure out who you are.
Check out urnotalone and tsroadmap - two early websites Faith frequented in her early days. Also,be sure and check out the the famous K.D. Lang and Cindy Crawford Vanity Fair cover. And perhaps you'll find some solace in the song Ring of Keys from the Broadway musical Fun Home .
